Save the Seals, One Email at a Time

Now that Canada has signed onto the 2022 COP15 UN biodiversity agreement, the Canadian government will have to change the way in which it treats seals and sea lions and the way in which it deals with the fishing industry. No longer can the government accede to the demands of fishermen who seek to pillage the oceans, using environmentally destructive and indiscriminate fishing gear. No longer can the government pander to fishermen who blame seals and sea lions when fish populations decline and who seek government support for culling these creatures. The damage to fish populations and to the ocean ecosystems is the result of reckless fishing and irresponsible fishery regulations and controls, as Canada's own fishery scientists and biologists attest. (See the short film, 'Seals and Sea Lions: Scoundrels or Scapegoats?' on YouTube.) Canada's government must work holistically to protect the oceans. This means protecting all species, because all species have important roles to play in these ecosystems. This includes top predators, such as seals and sea lions. Canada's government must begin by ending sealing immediately, fifty years after it rightly ended whaling. Then the government must develop a marine mammal protection law, for which it can look to the United States for guidance since the U.S. has had such a law for fifty years already. It is time to respect wildlife, to end the brutal slaughter of seals on the east coast, and to publicly acknowlege the important role that seals and sea lions play in their ecosystems. It is time for the Trudeau administration to stop spreading false propaganda to conflate subsistence sealing by Inuit with commercial sealing. And it is time to institute policies to protect all species at risk due to climate change, including harp seals.
