Seals and the Seal Hunt in the News in 2008

In 2008, the press has reported once again on the cruelty and waste that is the seal hunt. Shortly before the start of the killing, the Canadian government announced new sealing regulations. The European Union announced plans to ban seal product imports.

Demand for pelts declined, perhaps in part due to the proposed EU ban, causing a decline in pelt prices. At the same time, the cost of sealing has dramatically risen (thanks in part to the skyrocketing price of petroleum). As a result, fewer sealers went to the ice to slaughter seal pups.

In 2008, the press reported on how the treacherous conditions of the seal hunt resulted in the deaths of sealers and the sinking of sealing boats.
